Hi Susan,

Generally the intervals in between sets would allow for certain energy 
substrates to
replenish if that is what your trainer required. This basically means that 
certain types of
exercise of differing intensities and set duration would use a larger amount of 
a specific
substances to fuel the muscle contraction. Normally the more aerobic the 
workout the
small the interval on a continuum to max strength/power training having the 
longer rest
periods i.e. some fuels take longer to replenish. So in agreement with Dan, I 
not sure what
your PT is talking about. This explanation is a little crude but hopefully 
sheds some light
on the subject.
