Mark Rippetoe's book Starting Strength contains the best description of this I've read anywhere. I can't remember the specific pages, but it's a short ways into the chapter on the Bench Press. He does not recommend having the arms 90 degrees off the body, or parallel, but rather somewhere between 45 and 80 degrees off of the body, depending on how the back is positioned and the individual's body dimensions. While I disagree with a few comments about machines, overall it is probably the best book I've read on the exercises it covers.
