Re: [Supertraining] ELBOW POSITION DURING BENCH PRESS deadliftdiva Fri Jul 11 15:13:48 2008

My recollection is that some study of the bench press, and the angle of usage
vs the potential for "injury" on the bench press overall based on your
biacromial measurement was presented in one of the NSCA Journals recently - if
anybody has a link to that study or means of presenting it here, perhaps it
would be more of an objective item vs the opinions of such powerlifters as
shown below, many of whom rely on other supportive items, e.g. multiply shirts,
to prevent injury and require the mechanical alteration to their styles to
ALLOW THE SHIRTS TO BREAK.

There is also the item of the arching vs the flat bench press styles, which
also has some impact on angles of elbow and also hand positioning.

Much depends on the nature of your question, to optimize your OWN personal
mechanics or to emulate a style of a lifter who may not have your build, or
your tolerance for risk (some now make money doing this). There is also the
question of your usage or rejection of steroids and other chemical means to
"enhance" your lifting, which may add to your risk profile regarding the bench
press.

In my own experience as a lifter and a coach, I have examined the bench style
and positioning of the athlete first, noticed any obvious weak spots, any
imbalances in the pressing motion, and worked with them to make them more
comfortable and find their best position for them personally. Like the squat
and deadlift, I strongly believe in tailoring form to the individual and not
emulating blindly some lifter for whom that particular form works exceptionally
for, absenting the same mechanics and other factors present in the emulated
lifter overall!

Mark,

If you Google some of the recent bench press champions (e.g., Ryan Kennelly,
Scot Mendelson, and Shawn Lattimer) you will find online interviews, links
to their websites, books they have written, etc. discussing bench press
technique and training. I'm attaching a file that contains an interview
with Shawn Lattimer. I believe he briefly discusses elbow position in that
piece.

Hope that helps.
