Nick, yes I subscribe to Science of Sport blog. Heavy duty reading. What interests me in this latest Marino study is that the body mass differences are so wide between black and white athletes -- 59kg to 77kg that one would expect heat dissipation differences. 77kg would be heavy for most marathoners (or even 10k specialists). [At 182cms (6'1"), I was only 69 kgs (152) at my best in marathons and that was not unusual. I started running with a mate and we both lost about 6 kg from being fit for team sport (hockey). The thinner we got, the faster we got!] I suspect that weight for weight, east African black runners still have an advantage beyond heat dissipation. It could be some other genetic advantage of course, but they don't seem to need weights to build that sort of extraordinary running strength. But maybe other do. I'm skeptical but open. Go the Waratahs!
