New issue 159 by [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Terminal emulation problem

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Log into an Ubuntu Jaunty machine
2. Run "emacs -Q"

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Observe that the modeline exceeds the width of the screen. It should
instead precisely fill the screen.

What version of the product are you using (you can see this by using Menu
-> About in the Host List)?
1.5.3.

What type of system are you trying to connect to?
Ubuntu Jaunty.

If you are able to connect, what is the output of "echo $TERM", "uname -a",
and any other relevant information on the host?
TERM is set to "screen", but I also tried with "xterm" (set in ConnectBot).

Please provide any additional information below.

I also tried with GNU Zile, which is a strictly 8-bit Emacs clone, and had
the same problem.
