If so can I manage that risk in any way? As a general rule, always backup data that you care. I have not encountered any problem using zpool that is shared between 7.1 and 8.0. What you should pay attention to is that never do 'zpool upgrade' nor 'zfs upgrade' on 8.0 system until you have decided that you won't use 7.1 anymore.
