Darrin,

Well, any lens can be out of whack.  But if you find that it's in focus if you 
focus and shoot without re-composing, then it may be that you need to 
reevaluate how you are recomposing the shot, especially if the subject is close 
and you are shooting wide open.  This article probably says it better than I 
can (and has pictures!), but the basic take-away is that when you re-compose 
you may be altering the distance to the subject, which can throw it out of 
focus.  You may have better luck changing the focus point instead to one that 
matches your subject's position within your composition.
