 I hate to say it, but according to Cuse and Lindelof themselves, Charlie will 
NOT be coming back. He's dead, plain and simple. In a recent TV Guide article 
(I don't have the link on hand right now, but when I get it I'll post it) they 
discussed why the decision was made to kill Charlie off.

Yes, That is what I think also. Once the water stops gushing in that room he 
will be able to swim out of the port hole. We DIDN'T see him dead so there is 
still hope that he may survive this. 
  
What was that arrow that Patchy got shot into him? It didn't look like the 
darts that where shot at Kate, Jack and Sawyer that time the 'Others' shot  
them because they were going in convulsions before they laid still. It looked 
like an arrow instead of a dart that hit Patchy.

I don't think we have seen the last of Charlie. The port hole is more 
then big enough to swim out of. I am sure desmonds vision is correct but 
not nessarily his take on it. He saw Charlie floating in water and 
assumed he drowned.
