HI Len: I was fortunate that the bird turned its head a bit and reduced the distance that had to be in focus, and it was also sitting still. 1/80 sec. At F:10 so no room for movements. If you go to the website and look at the last picture, you will see that it is a different angle and I faced the same challenge you mention. However, the tail was a minor part of the image and does not really seem to matter very much. It was also F:10 but at 1/30 sec so no capacity to deal with a bob or a blink. Most of the stops were +2/3 wider than metered exposure and then I dealt with final exposure in Lightroom.
