One thing to consider is that you might not be able to peg your last
bike immediately, esp. if you are starting from scratch (which it
sounds like you're doing, even if you biked before).  You should
probably try borrowing (as you suggest) and running through some used
bikes before settling down.

That said, nobody's ever faulted Surly for utilitarian trailworthiness.
