Yes, for YOU it's solved, but for all the other newbies that install e17 and
don't check their gnome desktop, it won't when they want desktop icons.
Stick long enough in the IRC channels and you'll see how often that question
is brought up.
I'm not saying it doesn't need fixing, but what you are asking for requires
developers time, which we lack.
Also, I don't understand what you mean with the links being ignored or used
by Gnome.
