                Hello.

                In the (physical) Fedora machine the X server is
                not listening to the
                TCP port - I'm guessing it's using the socket in
                /tmp. In the virtual
                machine running Ubuntu the X server is listening to
                the TCP port 6010.

                Using xhost doesn't seem to be of any help.

        What do you mean "You can't do that" -- don't you have rsh
        or you try and it doesn't succeed?
        if you don't have rsh, try ssh without x-forwarding:
        phys> xhost +virt
        phys>  ssh -x  virt
        virt> xterm -d phys:0

        Note the "-x" argument to ssh which will disable ssh's
        built-in x-forwarding

        Rsh is not available for use.

        I tried with ssh -x and I get this


        xterm Xt error: Can't open display:
        xterm:  DISPLAY is not set

    Nope. Tried various combinations of :0 and :0.0, yet I still have the
    "can't open display" error. I ran some tests like these too,
    admittedly with X forwarding explicitly enabled, and didn't manage to
    find anything (nor to have them to work as expected).

Does ssh x-forwarding work for you:
phys>  ssh -X  virt
virt> xterm
If not then your phys system is not setup correctly. What is the value of DISPLAY on phys? 
phys> echo $DISPLAY
?

Yep standard X Forwarding works fine.

The output in the physical machine is :0 (without hostname). For
reference, in the virtual machine it's localhost:10.0 (and so on if I
start new sessions, 11, 12 etc.).
