The thing that stands out to my eyes here is that since you try to draw quite a few indexed triangles you are out of range for GL_UNSIGNED_SHORT. Why not use GL_UNSIGNED_INT ? Also, how to you measure drawing time for the calls?Are you really getting values that you can trust?
