Re: [vmaxtech] radial tires poll JMB Sun Apr 08 06:00:09 2012

If you are going with 18” wheels the bike will look very trick. You wont have
as big a tyre selection as in 17” but much better than 18 /15 bias ply.
I suggest you check with Carrozzerio to see what rim offset their 18” Vmax
wheels have as this may decide what tyre profile you can use.
The stock 15” Vmax rim is offset 3 mm to the right so a 150mm tyre can be
accomodated with clearance. Example, Greg Davies of “Wider Wheels” offsets his
18” rim another 6 mm, total offset is 9mm to the right which puts the rim
equidistant from the swing arm on both sides. The clearance you get with this
arrangement is 200 mm with the rim dead centre in the swing arm. The “problem”
is that the offset is noticeable when you ride the bike. It does not effect the
handling but you have to accommodate this with a slight weight shift.
Opinion seems to favour the 180/55 section tyre as having the best bite on the
asphalt for the Vmax. I use Bridgestone’s dual compound 180/55-18 and 110/80-18
Radials with upgraded front springs / emulators and solid engine mounts are
probably the most cost effective way of making the Vmax go around corners fast.

That is a relief, thanks Rudy.

The 180 should not rub, I had a 190/55 on a 17" on my 2000 with no rubbing
what so ever.

Thanks to all that have replied so quickly thus far (Dan, Glenn, Terence &
Rudy). While I'm patiently waiting (pant-pant-pant) for my Carrozzerio (how do
pronounce that?) 18" wheels I have been researching tires (see list below) that
come in size 180/55-18 (recommended size for the 5.5" rear rim). I have more
choices available in a 160/60-18 size. Manufacturers don't recommend using that
size on a 5.5" wheel but I've been told that it is a common tire-mounting
practice. If that is OK to use a 160/60-18 I'd like to go with the Michelin
Pilot Road 3 in size 160/60ZR18 (70 W). The most important consideration for me
is that the tire does not rub against the swing-arm. All comments are welcome.
Thanks in advance.
