This seems to work (at least for me).

Please download the modified latex2png script from
http://freenet-homepage.de/wh_ew/test/latex2png.txt
rename it to "latex2png" (just remove the file extension ".txt") and test it.
(Backup the file latex2png in the latex2rtf installation e.g. by renaming and 
put the new file in the same location.)

The -crop option in convert is not intended for automatic detection of borders 
in background color, see

This works, too, but I find the first solution more elegant.
Let's see if it works reliably.
