I think we all want something for nothing, ie. QTJ, but it's just not in the
cards. I don't see how Apple stands to make any money on it or why it would be
good for its core business. They'll keep iTunes alive by closing up the code
and gradually switching to a proprietary stack and cut 3rd party developers
loose. It's a perfectly reasonable position, just not one that's good for
developers looking for a freebie. I will sorely miss QTJ but have already
ported a good number of my projects to DSJ with good results. It's not free
for commercial use. Oh well.
Perhaps if QTJ had been available for commercial licensing, we would have a
more robust and longterm product.

What about Apple writing for non-Mac platforms ?
Where, for example, does that leave the Windows versions of QuickTime
and iTunes ?
It seems that Apple may have decided that there's neither value nor
benefit in developing or supporting multi-platform media technology,
leaving the likes of Adobe and Microsoft with an open field. I believe
that is a huge strategic mistake. QuickTime was (and, in some areas,
still is) ahead of the game but Apple have so publicly neglected it's
too late to save. I suppose the only consolation is that, unlike
OpenDoc, only a few misguided developers will lose out when Steve
"puts a bullet through the head of QuickTime"...
