I'd be impressed if you have someone's ear. Tony Wyant posted on the JMF list
two years ago asking for input, didn't seem to go anywhere. Maybe you have
more pull.
What I'd like, personally, froma JMF-like implementation in no particular order:
- Cross platform codec access. On Windows, that means accessing anything
available through DirectShow. On the Mac, it means Quicktime. So WMV, mp4,
mp3, etc... become available, not just on2's proprietary codec.
- Access to sysem level encoders as per above.
- Pixel level access to media, ie. frame grabbing.
- A Swing-compliant rendering pipeline enabling composting and overlay, HUD,
etc...
- An editing suite a la QTJ. This is the least likely to happen and the
hardest to implement, but, hey, as long as we're making our wishlists.
So, go ahead anT, talk to the people and get back to us on when any of this
will be implemented.

Apple / Java / QTJ - come on cheer up!
I'm at Sun know and i know all the media lot- what shall i tell them we need? i
know all my needs and yep there as strong as when we started playing in QTJ
development land all them moons ago :)

What about Apple writing for non-Mac platforms ?
Where, for example, does that leave the Windows versions of QuickTime
and iTunes ?
It seems that Apple may have decided that there's neither value nor
benefit in developing or supporting multi-platform media technology,
leaving the likes of Adobe and Microsoft with an open field. I believe
that is a huge strategic mistake. QuickTime was (and, in some areas,
still is) ahead of the game but Apple
have so publicly neglected it's
too late to save. I suppose the only consolation is that, unlike
OpenDoc, only a few misguided developers will lose out when Steve
"puts a bullet through the head of QuickTime"...
